Last Week in Texas

November 12, 2017

Well we now begin our last week in Texas. I'm really sorry to leaving, it's been such a wonderful visit with old friends and family but it will be good to be home for Thanksgiving and catching up with family and friends in Missouri. Then we will be headed up to Rhode Island, the state of my birth for the month of December.

We found out what happens when you ignore the sensor on the grey tanks. The water bubbles up and stays in the sink. I was in the middle of cooking and we planned to get to the dumping when we finished breakfast. Nope, I was using the kitchen sink and it gurgled and wouldn't go down. Kind of like a clogged sink at home. I yelled at Richard to "empty the grey tanks," which he immediately did. Sure a lot easier that clearing a clogged sink at home.

We've done some fun things and learned some new things about RVing. We were having problems with the wifi and while streaming Netflix and HBO it was taking lots of waiting time. We went to Best Buy and Walmart and they were no help. Everyone wanted to sell us a booster but we don't have a modem that is hooked into an internet connection. That much I knew. We called the AT&T store to see if they had something and they were clueless as well but did direct us to call the AT&T technical assistance. Finally we got some answers. Without buying very expensive roving Wifi equipment she said if we just want to stream off our HotSpot, turn off the wifi from the RV Park, which is what we were using. Just stream from the HotSpot and see if that didn't work. That's what we have done and we've had no problems since. Mind you we are 45 minutes for Houston so we're in a pretty good covered cell area. Not sure how this would work in the woods or some parks. We'll have to see. But we have Dish Satellite, cable through the park and now streaming with the Hot Spot. I think we'll survive. I don't even much like TV but Richard is definitely addicted and it is nice to go to bed and watch a movie now and then. I'd rather be listening to my audio books and as long as I have electricity and can charge my phone or IPAD I'm set.

I continue to enjoy cooking everyday and trying new recipes something I never had time to do. I made a delicious homemade easy chicken pot pie and a quinoa chili the was vegan and magnificent. I was so proud!!

We walked all over the boardwalk in Kemah, Texas which is on the gulf and it was awesome. It's all lit up at night with lots of restaurants and shops and amusement parks. I wanted to ride the Ferris wheel but we didn't. We ate a an awesome seafood restaurant, Landrys, and it was to die for. I had fried oysters for the first time. Not as good as calamari but almost. I had stuffed crab and fried shrimp. It's a wonder my gout hasn't flared up but I've been drinking gallons of water to keep it away.

On the way back to the RV park from Kemah, which was a 2 and 1/2 hour trek due to the traffic,(man I don't miss the traffic here. It is horrendous) we drove past the hospital that both my kids were born in 45 and 47 years ago. It's in the middle of downtown Houston and it took us 25 minutes to get there 47 years ago. Now it would have taken us an hour and 45 minutes to get there. But now they have a huge hospital every 30 miles it seems here. We pass more hospitals than we do schools. Houston is truly a medical center. Anyway the hospital still looks the same, just bigger. It brought back so many memories and of course we talked about them all as we were still over an hour from home. I was 17 and 19 years old. What was I thinking? The first one, Sherry, the doctor barely made it. The second one, Ty, the doctor didn't make it. But I was given "gas" back then so I was out of it. Yes it was in the way olden days when they did things like that. And even though I begged for them to let Richard in, husbands were to allowed into the "birthing rooms."

The weather has been perfect. Low 70's in the day and 50's at night. I hear it's freezing at home. While I prefer cold over heat, this weather has been the best and allowed us to eat out at night and enjoy the outdoor TV.

And then yesterday was Veteran's Day so we went to breakfast with a friend who was a Veteran at Denny's. And I let everyone I know how proud I am of my Veteran father. We were always so proud of him as you can see in the picture below. This picture is a day when his ship returned home after many months without him and we were so happy to welcome him home. I was holding his hand and he was holding my baby brother Brett. My mother, Brett and my sister Robin all celebrated in heaven on Veteran's day I hope, because they are all gone. But they are together!! I miss them everyday and especially miss them on days like this. But I'm so thankful to still have my 89 year old father with me.

So we're relaxing today and expecting Richard's brother to come for a visit. Plan to enjoy the rest of our time in Texas. It's so different knowing and visiting so many people while we're camping. When we have a busy day, it makes me long for the lazy days we've gotten use to.

I finally understand why old people get a rap for being nosey. I can't tell you how much we just observe and watch people now. We are curious about whatever anyone around us is doing. Sometimes Richard embarrasses me and heads over to find out what our neighbors are doing, where they are from, how long they've been doing this. It's amazing how much complete strangers tell each other or maybe we all just understand each other. But one day we were eating lunch and watching the family next to us. They were all dressed up and loading picnic stuff in their car. We were making up all kind of scenarios of what they were up to and that's when I told Richard, "we are turning into nosey old people. We need to stop this." But honestly people are so interesting and for the first time we have the time and energy to actually observe and create cool stories about them. We eventually found out that they were going to a wedding and then a picnic and had a change of clothes in their car. We were so relieved to find out the true story!!!!

To next week!!!!!

TEXAS FUN

NOVEMBER 7, 2017

I don't know what happened with my last blog. It was much longer but I'm having a hard time figuring this crazy thing out so I must not have saved it right. Too much lost. Sorry but I'm not going to redo it and that's so cool because if this was work I would have to but guess what? IT's not work so I'm letting it stand the way it is. As you can see by this blog I am learning. I can now add pictures!! Yea!!!

But lots of things have been going on. First, a really neat thing  happened. We decided to take a ride up Hwy 75 just to see the sights. We headed North and ended up in Huntsville, Texas. We stopped for lunch and Richard was wearing his KC Chiefs tee shirt. The manager came up and asked if we were from KC. We said "yes." He informed us that he spent several years in KC. He managed a Chipotle up near the airport and he loved KC. We talked for awhile and we told him we were from around Lees Summit and he said "oh wow, those stores do very well." We said we knew that because everybody loves Chipotle. We chatted and then got in line to get our meal. When we went to pay, the cashier said, "your lunch has been taken care of." We were so shocked and so excited. Things like that don't usually happen to us. When we left I went up and thanked him and gave him a big hug. Great day!!!!

That night I came home and was reading in bed. I looked over to plug in my phone and saw a box. I opened it and found a beautiful ruby heart neckless!!! It was such a surprise. What a true love my Richard is. Always full of surprises!! I was very nice to him. :)

Before the Astros won the World Series, this city was going out of their minds. We have some awesome friends and one of them, Eve Pena, a child I've known since she was a year old, lives in downtown Houston in a gorgeous high rise on the 32nd floor. I was a bit scared out on her deck. I couldn't look down but it was beautiful. We watched one of the Penant games and it was amazing. Such a treat!!

Of course everyone knows now that the Astros took the World Series. OMG, I was so excited.

The morning of the parade I made Richard stop at Academy to buy tee shirts. I got in line with a woman and started talking. I'm getting as bad as Richard. She was from Panama and was getting hats for her employees back home. That's the country of Panama, not Panama City. Anyway, she said that her son managed the store and he was up all night getting ready for the day. You can imagine how crazy it was. Then we headed to the parade. Can't even begin to describe it. Literally, a million people showed up. There was no way to see any of the players but I told Richard it wasn't about seeing anyone, it was about just being there in the moment. Needless to say we left immediately. When I went to the Royals parade in 2015 I didn't get home until 9PM. I knew we wouldn't get home until midnight in Houston if we stayed,  and we really don't know the  roads in Houston anymore. But it was a memorable day!!!

Sunday was the church shooting so that was a terrible day. It really rocked Texas and we didn't feel like doing anything. It was so heartbreaking wasn't it? I just think we have to be prepared to go at any minute because there are more crazies out there everyday. You just never know and there is no safe place. I am learning to live in the moment and be grateful everyday. Enough sadness. It's not healthy to dwell and yet I'm conscientious that the sadness for those families will be long lived.

I think we again brought the heat with us. It has been up in the 80's every day. That means we have the air-conditioners on but I'm grateful it's cool inside. But outside, ugh. We spent yesterday at the pool and that was actually pretty nice. I heard it was in the 30's in KC.

My girlfriend has been in the hospital so we have learned our way to and from Tomball hospital which is 45 minutes away. But we got our new TX TAG so we can take the toll roads and we feel so special. No stopping to pay. You just slide right by. We love it. We now have an EZ PASS for North East part of the country, TX Tag which works in Texas and Oklahoma and we have the SUN Pass which gets us around the Southeast, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Next year we will get one for the West coast.

WE continue to learn the secrets of RVing. We just found out that we have to pull our slides in at least once a week so the plan is to do that on Monday's (cleaning day). That is also black water dump day and I am fascinated by that. Richard said I'm "Poop Obsessed," because I won't let him do it unless I'm watching. We have something in it, TST, that eats everything and so it's just brown water. It is amazing to me!!!

Then I also learned that you cannot put melamine dishes in the microwave. I was heating some enchiladas up in the microwave and the dish burned and cracked. I went to Amazon to reorder the dishes. They were so cute. They had trailers on them and I was reading the info on them and there it was, clear as could be,  "not suitable for microwave use." I really ought to read these things. Camp Casual (CC-001) 12 piece Dish set from Amazon.

I had a friend over Saturday and I fixed a new recipe. I was chicken breasts topped with cream of mushroom soup, sour cream and sherry. It was TERRIBLE. I really mean TERRIBLE. I had made enough to have it another day for dinner but there was no way Richard could have gotten it down. My friend Linda suggested I wash the chicken off and make a homemade pot pie. So that's what I did. I'm making it tonight so we'll see if it's palatable. There are really some recipes in these books that are not good!!

But that hasn't stopped me from making my pies. I have done a homemade apple pie as well as a coconut custard pie and they were perfect!!

Well after my chicken failure that night I told Linda we'd go out to a Mexican restaurant that I was told was the best in Willis Texas. We went and it was packed, I mean packed. I was so excited because I love, love, love Mexican food. OMG, it was awful. The meat on the taco was nasty and the tortilla shell was stale. The enchilada was even worse and it didn't even come with beans and rice, however I'm so glad it didn't. I bet it would have been nasty. So if you are ever in Willis, Texas do not, I repeat do not go to Los Perilgos!!!

So Saturday was a flop as far as food goes but Linda and I had a great time laughing about it.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow and then it will be in the 60's the rest of the time we are here. Now that's what I'm talkin about!!!! Can't wait. On Friday's they have a food truck and a band that comes to the part. Everyone meets up at the front and listens and eats around a huge fire pit. It's awesome and we are meeting some really great people that are living the dream with us. Until then we are enjoying the beautiful pool. Why do we get so excited about this. I mean we have a pool at home but man this is fun!!

I still have dreams that I'm at work but I always wake up as soon as it starts to get stressful in the dream so I'm slowing down in that area. Still sleeping in till  9 or 10. I'm not taking naps but my hubby is. He's asleep now but he's up half the night and guess what......no one cares :)

So we've gotten to spend time with friends and family from years ago. We haven't lived in Houston since 1980 but we were here from 1970 to 1980 and they were special years because my two babies were born here. The town has changed but the friends have not!!!

Here's to our last 10 days in Texas!!!!!!!!!

GO ASTROS!!!

10-27-17-Willis Texas

Well who would believe we would be near Houston Texas when the  Houston Astros won the pennant. This brings back so many 2015 memories when the Kansas City Royals won and the excitement the city felt. I am loving it!!

So last night they played their

A Month in Texas

I couldn't wait to get on the road especially after I had a real scare with my liver. My last ultrasound showed several spots on my liver so the doctor squeezed me in on a Thursday night before we took off to have an MRI. It turned out they were nothing so I was good to go. I had been considering skipping one of my bi-annual check-ups so that scare gave me a needed wake-up call. I will not miss any of my check-up even if it means we have to head home.

So we took off a week ago Monday and of course travel day is always stressful to me. I don't read the maps good enough for Richard, he gets frustrated. I think he drives too fast (65) because we are pulling a trailer and that makes me angry but I don't want to yell when I see the speedometer or I'll scare him. Just all kinds of things. We left the canoe and the kayak home because the park we are staying in would not allow us to put them around the trailer. That took that stress out of the trip because I am always worried that the canoe will fall off. I guess eventually I won't be so antsy on travel day. The problem is I know that if anything goes wrong with that truck or trailer it takes an arm and a leg to get fixed and we have to be careful on our retirement income. ICK!!!

So we got to Norman, Oklahoma and did our first boon docking night. WOW!! What an experience. We stopped at Riverwind Casino. There was one other RV parked there and they came right over and welcomed us and talked to us. They had been doing it for several years and were pros. They said the casino's are very safe. The minute we pulled in a casino staff member came over to us in  a golf cart. We were afraid he was going to say we couldn't stay but we had looked it up online and it said overnight parking was welcome. He just wanted to welcome us and tell us the best spot and then offer us a ride to the casino. We were at the far end of the parking lot but there were bright lights and cameras everywhere. We settled in. We only opened one slide in the bedroom and didn't unhook the truck but we had water, toilet and electricity. It got down to 43 degrees so we were super comfortable. We did go to the casino and ate dinner and of course walked and walked so we got plenty of exercise. Played roulette for a few minutes. On my way out I through $10.00 in a slot and won $39.00 so we grabbed our winnings and headed home. We slept like babies. And best of all----the night was FREE. We'll definitely doing that again.

We got to the RV park and it is beautiful. Like the name, Majestic Pines, it is among beautiful tall pine trees in Willis, Texas. We are in a pull-thru spot with full hook ups for $450 a month. Free laundry and they keep the place spotless. They have level concrete pads and nice picnic tables. They blow off the streets and grass and best of all it is a gated park. We have a code to get in and out of the park. It is almost full and I'm sure that's why. Many are full timers here that stay for the winter. It is the quietest park we have ever been in. We have only seen 3 kids. They have pool and  hot tub with mostly 60+ers so we all look 60+. We are loving it.

The Houston Astros took the Penate so lots of folks sit outside at night and watch the game on TV. Richard got ours all working for tonights first World Series game. Doesn't get any better than this!!

There is a nice town about 15 minutes away with Walmart and Krogers and everything else so when want something it's close. Now this is my idea of camping!!!

We've had lots of friends come over and sit outside and talk and eat.  We are truly loving it. I think they understand how Dana Jones can retire and camp. Everyone is so shocked when we tell them that's what we're doing but it's glamour camping at it's best.

Richard said this morning, "Oh no we only have 3 weeks left until we head home." I feel the same way. Maybe we should stay 2 months in each state. We both hate travel days. It's the only time we disagree. So this is our wonderful month in Texas.

Since We've been Home

We got home or should I say my "son's" home and it's been a whirling couple of weeks. The house was immaculate when we arrived. That was nice. I was actually dreading being off the road but we had lots to do. My daughter Sherry and her family took off to Florida for their annual time share vacation and Richard covered the business. It still feels so weird being here and not going to work. So one day Richard had to go and do a reclean for the business. I thought I'd be a nice wife and go help him. I haven't helped him clean for at least 25 years and we didn't really work well together. He has his own way of doing things and his way or the byway. But I figured how bad could it be. It's just vacuuming and wiping cabinet tops. Time should be about an hour. So I went. Things were going pretty well until I went upstairs to vacuum the 4 bedrooms. The vacuum cleaner was a piece of CRAP!! Typical of the kind of equipment he uses. But ok, I will be nice and not complain. The handle was hanging in half and as I was trying to put it together he walked in and said, "wait, you have to be careful. You can't hold it from the handle, you have to reach down a little lower than the handle so it won't break." I said, You are kidding me right?" He said "I've used it for months this way." So he refined the duct tape handle repair and I started to vacuum. Have you ever had to "sort of bend down to vacuum? Not easy." It was a tug and push and I got madder by the minute. Then I decided I'd let the vacuum help me by using my hip to push it forward and wallaa, I got a shock on my hip. I said maybe I was just imagining it so I did it again. Nope, I was definitely getting electrocuted. Should I be surprised......the tip of the handle was missing and the cord was showing. I went downstairs and told him I was done, he could do the rest. I had done 2 1/2 bedrooms so I think I did pretty good. So I finished wiping and he wasn't saying anything because he knew I was ready to blow. And then I remembered why I quit this business, finished college and go my own job. I CANNOT WORK WITH THE MAN!!!!

When I stop to think about it I sorta get concerned with myself. This man that I love with all my heart would have been so happy living in a little trailer all his life and had me clean houses with him. OH MY GOD!! He has me exactly where he always wanted me to be. I guess 22 years at Children's Protective Services did the job for him. I'm so happy to be in a trailer helping him out!! Kind of scary wouldn't you say? Difference between 2017 and 1970 is I'm actually happy to be where I am. My desire for ambition, stuff and acceptance is GONE. I'm so satisfied to be in a small place with not a lot of stuff and my soul mate (not working)!!! That's what 65 years does to you!!!!

So we did all our doctor visits and although I had a scare because they found some spots on my liver, after an MRI found that it was nothing to worry about. Richard came out great. We both got our flu shots, pneumonia shots and shingle shots. We are good to go and go we will.

We had a wonderful 89th birthday celebration with my father while we were here. I had lunch with one of my favorite work friends and also dinner with my old Jackson County CD team. I've had Dad and Barbara over several times for dinner and all in all, it was a great two weeks but am I ever itching to go.

So tomorrow morning we hit the road to Willis Texas for a month. I can't wait. I wish it was going to be cooler that the 80's but I have lots of friends and family we can spent time with in air-conditioning I'm sure. Tomorrow night we plan on boon-docking for the first time. That is parking in a parking lot of a Walmart, Truck Stop or Casino. No hookups but we have about 20 gallons of fresh water in our tank and a generator that will run our air-conditioner as well as our wonderful king size bed. So here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lake Thompson Recreational Area in DeSmet, South Dakota

September 25, 2017-It's been raining off and on since we got here Saturday so we haven't really done anything except chill. The lake we are on is so huge that it looks and feels like we are on the ocean. It's amazing!!

We did go to the town of DeSmet, which is the town that Laura Ingalls Little House on the Prarie took place. We plan to go visit her house this week when it stops raining. We found a really nice grocery store. We were the only customers in the store Saturday night so of course we got friendly with the cashier. She looked like she was about 18 but she was 28. She was from Florida and we asked what brought her up to South Dakota. She said she came with a friend whose mother lived here. She was trying to clean her life up as she was living very hard. She said we couldn't tell but she had tattoos up and down her arms, back and legs and she had a lip ring and a nose ring. She actually did look out of place in this little town. Anyway she said she has been clean and sober for 8 years and you could tell she was proud of it. She said she adopted her little sister 6 years ago when she was 12 years old. I told her that was wonderful and that my daughter had just adopted two teenage boys last year and they were a handful but truly completed her life. She said that her sister just turned 18 and she has just started college. I also told her I was retired from CPS and she said CPS was involved in her life her entire childhood. She was very positive and I told her how inspriring she was. She now has her husbands two boys, her sister and a year and a half old son. She looked so proud and she should be. The story actually excited me and I didn't want to leave. I just wanted to keep talking. So I guess I haven't completely lost that social worker in me. I was afraid I had but it really made my day. I also couldn't believe I couldn't get away from it. It seems CPS touches every life in some minut way!!

Yesterday day we just sat out by the lake until it got too cold but I'm not complaining. I love this chill. We had the fireplace on in the coach all day! It was so cozy!! And I watched 3 chick flics on the Hallmark Channel. I've never watched that channel before but I love it.

We walked to the bathroom/shower in the afternoon. It's pretty close and we decided to use it when we can especially for showers since we only have electricity at the site and not water and sewer. We filled the fresh water tank and dumped the grey and black tanks when we pulled in so we have a week  to last before we have to do something and we are leaving next Saturday so we're hoping we're ok. We have a few gallons of drinking water plus a 43 gallon fresh tank. It will make a big difference if we shower elsewhere.

Last night we went into town to the only laundromat. We of course were the only ones there. It was clean and quiet. The owner came in before we left and of course we talked to him for awhile. I told him when we drove up it was dark and I thought it was closed. He said it's open 24/7. I was shocked. He just got into this venture about 8 years ago and it does pretty well. We were surprised he hadn't had any trouble since the doors are open all the time and no one misuses it. He said most people don't lock their cars or houses here. Small towns!! Gotta love them!! But then there are only 1067 people living here.

At night we went up to take showers and get ready for bed and guess what? We didn't have hot water. It was barely lukewarm. I thought about just biting the bullet and taking a lukewarm shower but couldn't do my hair. I did shower  my body but it was grueling. I said no way, this is not what I bargained for. I walked over to the men's bathroom and went in to talk to Rich. We were the only ones there. He said he knew. He wasn't going to either. He'd be out after he brushed his teeth. I guess he left the hot water on while he was brushing his teeth and it got hotter and hotter so he went into the shower and it was hot. He came out and told me and asked if I wanted to go back and try again. I declined. I was too cold to start all over. He came out all clean and happy and we went home. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow night.

We came home and sat out by the fire. Oh did I tell you we are the only campers in the entire park? It was almost scary but I guess we're safe. We do lock our doors in the truck and the coach. But we woke up this morning with no issues. We left the fireplace on all night and were toasty warm. It was 45 degrees when I got up to put on coffee. I left Richard asleep and I had breakfast and perused recipe books and found a recipe I'm going to try tonight. The I started the bread maker. I'm going to make Irish potato bread.

It's finally stopped raining and I actually see the sun peeking out so I guess I'll head outside with my coffee to explore. Rich is up and out and doing who knows what.

Gets Better Every Day

9-22-2017 -- Lots of things going on since we got to Chief White Crane Recreational park in Yankton, SD. We love it here but it's been a surprise that it's been so hot and we've had to use the air conditioners more than we expected, more days than not. But I'm just thankful that we have them both. I'm nice and cool at night and sleeping like a baby.

I figured out last Sunday that I can only take so much relaxing and I needed to be a little busy. I got a bit depressed and started worrying about my family. My daughter was fighting with her hubby. Similar to Rich and I when we were raising teenagers. We couldn't agree on what they could do and what they couldn't. I was so much more lenient than he was. But they turned out ok so I guess the fighting just lets them know that you can fight and still love each other and stay together. I know they love each other deeply so I'm going to try not to worry. By Monday she was saying she thinks they are just going to move forward and forget about the weekend because they will never agree. That's what we eventually learned. No way you're going to change each other. When we figured that out and just accepted our differences, life got so much easier.

And of course who doesn't worry about a father who is 88 years old. I have to stay off that worry or I'll drive myself crazy. So Monday we got up and I cleaned the coach real good. Then we went to the laundromat and did 4 loads of laundry. I actually don't mind that. It all gets done at once in about 2 hours. We had worked hard cleaning and organizing and I felt really good. Then we walked across the Meridian Bridge between South Dakota and Nebraska. It was very cool. We talked to a retired school teacher who said she does it about 3 times a week. It's over the water so she doesn't have to worry about pollen and allergies.

Tuesday Richard took the kayak and went on the lake. That was a bit scary because he looked so unstable but he finally got settled in without tipping and going in the water and I left him to it. He called me a couple hours later and I went and picked him up. He had really enjoyed it. I was able to come home and just enjoy some "aloneness." Also didn't know that would be so much fun. I watched a chic flick and read without worrying about someone else. He said he felt the same way. It's weird what you still learn after 47 years together.

Wednesday we went to the Lewis & Clark Visitors Center across the river in Nebraska. That was fascinating. We watched 3 videos about Lewis and Clarks journey up the river from St. Louis MO to California. OMG, those men must have been dedicated and strong. They pushed those boats with huge poles to go against the current. And they had to deal with different Indian Tribes all along the way, which by the way most of them were very peaceful and cooperative. Not like you see in the movies. I'm so glad I didn't live during that time. I don't think I would have been strong enough. They must have smelled as they couldn't take many baths and they had to sleep with all those bugs and animal sounds.

You wouldn't believe that living this life has to be so Cush for me or I wouldn't do it.  In fact, the worst thing about this whole trip has been the flies and bugs. They are awful. We bought a "trapper" not a "zapper" from Walmart to see if that would help. We think it did but there are still hundreds. We hung a fly paper strip. That got a lot of them but not all. We sit everywhere with a fly swatter. Even in the restaurants there are flies. We went to a local restaurant yesterday and I almost got up to leave as I saw flies around the booth. But then we went to dinner at a Subway and I still saw them around us. We went last night to Walmart to get some more fly strips and they were completely sold out so I think something is going on around here. Fortunately it hasn't been mosquito's. That's what we were fighting at home all summer.

So yesterday we drove 2 and 1/2 hours to sight see. We saw the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. We went to an Indian Burial Ground and saw an archeology dig that had been going on for 20 years. Talk about slow. It looked like about 10 holes in the ground but I guess they've found lots of stuff as they dig down. Then we drove to Chamberlain, SD and saw the Dignity Statue of an Indian woman, 50 feet high. That was the best!!! We didn't get home until 9PM so we were zonked but it was great. We enjoyed all the country side with mile after mile of cattle ranches, corn fields, sunflower fields, soy bean fields and windmill farms. It looked like most farms had bee hives. Such beautiful country. I can understand why city people don't understand what they are missing. We took a different highway home (50 Hwy) and for 2 hours we only saw about 5 cars. It was eerie but calming.

So today we are going to relax and pack some things tonight to avoid packing in the rain tomorrow. We head north tomorrow to De Smet, SD. I feel so totally blessed. I'm still checking work email but mostly just deleting. It's obvious they have moved on just fine without me. I had a dream last night that I was having to defend some of my leadership efforts to some of my management team. Have no idea what that means except it's still on my mind and is a worry somehow. But overall, I'm just grateful that I'm done.

Here's to the continuing adventure!!!

The Adventure Begins

September 9, 2017 -- We were all loaded up and ready to leave in the morning. We were so excited that we couldn't sleep and we thought we would leave around 8AM but by 6AM we couldn't bide our time anymore so we got in the truck and took off. We were so excited like little kids. Everything was fine until it looked like the canoe on the top was moving. So we measured how far it was from the trailer. We started out 27 inches and after a few hours it was 24. Richard tied it down tighter and we traveled to Cracker Barrel. We split a breakfast which is something we have decided to do when we go to restaurants because we always get too much. The split was perfect.

We left and were getting on the freeway and Richard heard a slight banging on the roof so he pulled over on the shoulder of the axis road and the trailer was now 15 inches from the trailer and obviously moving.

I was ready to take it off and leave it on the side of the road but he worked until he thought it was tight again. I was scared to death someone would come by and side swipe him.

We got underway and the first thing I did was go on Amazon to see if I could find a better canoe carrier. I did find one so we will probably get one before we leave. We can have it delivered to General Delivery at the Yankton Post Office to pick it up. Danger thwarted!!!

We got in to Chief White Crane Park but we had to cross a bridge over the Dam and you know how I hate bridges so I closed my eyes and we got here. The park is next to a nice lake which is next to the Missouri River. It's absolutely beautiful. However it was pouring down rain while we hooked up. We unhooked, leveled and tied into electricity and water and went inside. We were asleep by 7PM.

Travel days are not my favorite days but woke up this morning September 10, 2017 and it is drop dead gorgeous. We will hook everything else up today in between RELAXING. The park is almost empty because everyone has to go back to work tomorrow but guess what........NOT ME!!!

Almost Done

I have 20 more working days left and we're on our way!!! South Dakota is our first adventure!! We can't wait. Richard is getting a hitch put on the front of the truck because we have decided to carry the  bikes on the front of the truck. Hopefully that will be our last pre-travel expense. We have about $10,000 in extras that we've purchased to get ready to be road ready. Glad that's done!!!That included the quiet generator twins,  the camper shell, the electrical surge protector. Gosh there was so much!!! Those were the big things. There were a zillion little things like a small shop vac, all the HDMI cords, bedroom DVD player, set of iron skillets to cook outside on, comfortable outdoor chairs and on and on and on. But I'm sure it will be well worth it!!!
